There has been a lot of debate over Apple’s decision to throttle older iPhones to maintain battery life at the sacrifice of performance. Many, myself included, feel this is a very intelligent solution to a very real problem plaguing smartphones today. Others, however, feel the opposite and are demanding functionality to reverse this change made by Apple. Well there made are getting their wish and with iOS 11.3, users now have the ability to turn off throttling.

There are a lot of important features and changes being made in iOS 11.3, but the biggest is the addition of settings to allow users to turn performance throttling off. This feature was something Apple had been putting in iOS releases to allow for better battery life on aging iPhones. When news broke that this was no longer an urban-myth, but in fact, a reality, a vocal group of users attacked Apple online demanding the ability to choose; good battery life or peak performance.
To make the changes you obviously need to be running iOS 11.3, which is yet to come as a public final release. Once you have the update you will be able to adjust the battery management settings.
The second thing to be aware of if you are an iPhone user wanting to adjust these settings is that Apple’s latest devices, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, will never see this setting due to hardware updates made to mitigate the issues older device had. Compatible devices are the iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus. At this time, there are no plans to offer this functionality to users of the iPhone 5s and older.

To make the changes on your iOS 11.3 device you will do the following:
- Open “Settings“
- Tap “Battery“
- Tap “Battery Health“
Once here you will see some information on details pertaining to how Li-Ion batteries function. Next, you will see percentage indicator telling you what your phone maximum battery capacity is.
If your maximum capacity is sub-80% you will be given a message notifying you that your batteries health is “significantly degraded” accompanied by link explaining how to get it serviced.
If your max capacity is as high as 95% and your iPhone has suffered from a shutdown due to battery degradation you will be alerted to the fact that “performance management has been applied to prevent this from happening again”. You have the ability to turn off performance management. However, you cannot turn it back on until your phone experiences another battery event causing a shutdown. If your phone does shut down again due to a battery issue, the performance management setting will automatically be re-enabled.
This functionality is being applied in a very Apple way. If users, myself included, could pick, this would simply be a toggle I can turn off and on at will. But in the word of iPhones and iOS Apple always knows best.
